Home Ground
Every plumber in the province will tell you they're local. In Pennfield we mean it flatly: the shop is at 150 McKay Loop Rd, the truck gets loaded there in the morning, and it comes back there at the end of the day. If you live in Pennfield, you are usually the shortest drive on the schedule.
That is worth more than it sounds. When a job turns out to need a fitting that isn't on the truck, fetching it costs a few minutes instead of half an afternoon. And if you ring back a week later because something still doesn't sound right, coming to check is not a production.
The other half of being from here is knowing what we're walking into before we open the door. Around Pennfield we are rarely looking at identical houses on identical lots. Mechanical rooms end up wherever there was room for them, the water line runs where the machine could get, and plenty of homes have been added onto more than once — which means more than one era of pipe under the same roof. We have crawled under enough of them to stop being surprised. When somebody describes a noise, a smell or a stain over the phone, we usually have a short list of likely causes before the truck leaves the yard. None of which changes the standard — same licensed and insured work, same price agreed before anything starts. Being close just takes the friction out of it.
The Usual Calls
Six jobs make up the bulk of the week here. None of them are exotic. What matters is working out which one you're looking at before anybody starts pulling things apart.
Where a property makes its own water and handles its own waste, the pump and pressure tank are the heart of it. Pressure that surges, a pump clicking on and off every few seconds, or taps that spit air are the system telling you something. The tap is rarely the problem.
Pumps & well systemsThe most common call we take, here and everywhere. Sometimes it's an element or a thermostat and the tank has years left in it. Sometimes the tank is finished. Being close by means eyes on it early, which matters when the real question is whether it's leaking.
Water heatersA tub that empties slowly and a kitchen sink that gurgles when the washer drains are early warnings, not two separate problems. Where the line runs out to a septic field, a main-line blockage isn't something to keep plunging at. Clear it, then find out what caused it.
Drain cleaningWinter finds the same weak spots every year: a run through an unheated crawl space, a line tight against an outside wall, an outdoor bib nobody drained in the fall. We fix the split, then work out why that run froze so it isn't an annual event.
Leak & pipe repairTaps, toilets, sinks, tubs, laundry hookups and outdoor bibs. Small jobs get put off because booking one feels like more trouble than living with the drip. When the shop is up the road, a fixture swap doesn't have to be a whole-day event to be worth doing.
Fixture installsA burst line, no water at all, or water somewhere it has no business being. Phone — don't write — and shut the main off if you can reach it safely. If you're not certain where your shut-off is, that's a thing to find out on a calm day rather than a bad one.
Emergency plumbingPennfield is also where a good share of our new construction and renovation work happens, and rough-in is a different animal from service work. It goes in before the walls close, so it has to be right the first time — the next person to see it is the inspector, and the one after that is the drywaller.
That last part is where being close by earns its keep. Trades stack up on a job site: if the plumber runs late, the insulator runs late, and everybody behind them runs later still. We would rather be the trade that holds a schedule together than the one that pulls it apart.
On a renovation you also get a straight opinion about what's worth keeping. An open wall is the cheapest that wall will ever be. If there's old pipe in there that will cause grief in five years, we'll say so while replacing it still only costs labour and fittings — and if it's sound, we'll say that too.
New house, addition, or a bathroom coming down to the studs: call before the framing goes up if you can. Decisions about where the water and drains run are far cheaper to make on paper.

150 McKay Loop Rd is where the truck gets loaded, where the stock sits and where the paperwork gets sorted out at the end of the day. Shop hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm, closed Saturday and Sunday. If you would sooner come by than phone, give us a ring first — the truck is out most of the day.
